Which Housing Option to Choose, and Why

Is it smarter to choose housing near the school or on campus, or in the city center or another Reims neighborhood? We have a look at the pros and cons of each option.

Living on Campus (the ACOBHA Residences)
  • Advantages:
Living among students is a definite help in making your first contacts. Students that live in the ACOBHA residences are quickly integrated into the school – this may be true for other students, but it’s certain that living in the same building makes student life more warm and friendly. Of course, students have their personal comforts in individual, well-insulated studios, and they have a parking spot. Further, living on campus means being closer to the associations and IT rooms, open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 4 a.m. Students can also run their errands at two nearby supermarkets and a convenience store.
  • IDisadvantages:
Living on campus means greater distance from the charms of downtown (shops, restaurants, bars, culture, etc.)

Living Near Campus
  • Advantages:
Proximity to the school offers advantages that are quite similar to living on campus. Some students choose to live between Campus 1 and Campus 2 to have access to more facilities. Students may find housing in an HLM (public housing) or in a university residence near both campuses for a low cost.
  • Disadvantages:
The disadvantages inherent in living outside of the Reims city center.

Living in the City Center
  • Advantages:
Take advantage of all the pleasures of life in the city center: shopping, cinema, theatre, shopping in the center’s small businesses and convenience stores until 9 p.m., or simply enjoy the city’s nightlife. Further, there are frequent buses to campus until 10 p.m. (the main line passes every three minutes). Many students choose to live in the city center in rented group homes after a year at Reims.
  • Disadvantages:
Housing costs can be high (be sure to compare). Free parking is difficult to find during the day (there is a free carpark near the Charles de Gaulle Bridge, but it fills up quickly). For students who do not have a car, it is somewhat harder to get to campus – this limits access to student associations and IT facilities after 11 p.m. However, many students’ friends own cars and can give a student a lift home.

Live in the City, but Outside the Center
  • Advantages:
Prices are often lower than for larger housing areas. Further, students will find local businesses and lively neighborhoods even outside the city center. This solution is a good one for students with a car or who wish to share a rented home at really low cost.
  • Disadvantages:
Difficulty getting around without a car. Evenings are not lively.
